Red Oak derives its name from the Red Oak Creek which flows through the community. Settlers first arrived in the 1850s. In 1865, it became the official county seat of Montgomery County and the courthouse, which was previously located seven miles east in Frankfort, was towed to the community in the middle of a snow storm.

Stanton is located seven miles east of Red Oak on Highway 34. Stanton is best known for its Swedish heritage, which can be experienced through the Swedish Heritage and Cultural Center, located in the center of town, and the Swedish Coffeepot Water Tower, known as the largest in the world. Stanton is also the home of Viking Lake, a popular state park used for fishing, swimming, camping, boating, picnicking, and hiking.

Villisca is located in Montgomery County, southwest of the county seat of Red Oak. The community has a proud military history beginning with the construction in 1912 of Iowa's only publicly funded and longest operating Armory on the north side of the town square. Villisca's Company F has represented the community, the state, and the country in the 1916 expedition into Mexico, World War One, World War Two, Korea, and Vietnam. Villisca is the site of a Pulitzer Prize winning photo depicting Lt. Col. Robert Moore greeting his family at the depot after returning from service in Africa.

Elliott

Elliott, Iowa was founded in 1879. Elliott was named for Charles Elliott Perkins, Vice President of C.B.& Q. Railroad, who bought the tract of land that Elliott sits on today. Elliott is a farm-oriented community, located 12 miles north of Red Oak and 8 miles south of Griswold on Iowa Highway 48. Elliott's location makes an ideal drive to Red Oak, Griswold, Atlantic and Omaha for work or play.
