Genetic Screening at MCMH

Understanding your risk for hereditary cancer can be a powerful step toward protecting your health and the health of your family. At Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, our genetic screening program helps patients identify inherited cancer risks early, make informed medical decisions, and take proactive steps toward prevention and personalized treatment.

Why Genetic Testing Matters

Genetic testing for cancer looks for inherited gene mutations that increase the risk of developing certain cancers. These insights can:

  • Identify hereditary cancer risks for you and your family
  • Guide screening and prevention, including earlier or more frequent surveillance
  • Inform treatment decisions, such as surgery or medication choices
  • Determine eligibility for targeted therapies that are more effective for specific mutations
  • Provide clarity for family members, helping them understand their own health risks

Our team is committed to compassionate counseling, clear explanations, and evidence‑based guidance at every step.

When to Consider Genetic Testing

You may benefit from genetic testing if you personally have, or have a family history of, the following:

Rare or High‑Risk Cancers

  • Male breast cancer
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Metastatic prostate cancer

Early-Onset Cancer (Before Age 50)

  • Breast
  • Colorectal
  • Uterine

Multiple Cancers

  • Two primary cancers in the same individual
  • Three related cancers within a family
  • Ten or more colorectal polyps (adenomas) in a lifetime

Other Risk Indicators

  • Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry
  • A known gene mutation in your family
  • Significant or unusual family cancer history

If any of these apply to you or your family, our genetic counseling team can help determine whether testing is the right next step.
